Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity not only to assume direction of a well-run region, but also to make an impact as you oversee the opening of two brand new facilities. Over the past 18 years CareMeridian has posted a stellar track record by combining a unique care model, a strong commitment to our mission, and a team of professionals who prefer an entrepreneurial environment to the bureaucracy of larger healthcare settings. We're experiencing strong growth and, as you contribute to that growth, you will be in a position to take advantage of the "upward draft" of opportunity it creates.

You will act as a resource for seven facilities from Oxnard to Sacramento that provide sub-acute care combining the aesthetics of a residential environment with state-of-the-art technology and a service platform that is truly unique in the industry. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will be an RN with experience in acute care, including med/surg or ICU, and a track record of success in clinical, financial, operational, and people management. We're looking for a professional with working knowledge of the continuum of long-term care as well as the resourcefulness to make independent decisions.

CareMeridian delivers high-quality, cost-effective medical management and restorative care to individuals with complex conditions like traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Our 1:4 staff to patient ratio is the highest in the industry and our highly integrated rehab programs result in fewer re-hospitalization discharges and greater improvement in our patients' quality of life. We're created environments that are not only responsive to our patients and their families, but also rewarding to our employees -- just one reason why we have a large number of long-tenured employees.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • Solid business savvy.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach to leadership.
  • Strong organizational abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred but not required:
  • Familiarity with JCAHO standards and knowledge of Title 22 compliance.
  • A background in neurological care and/or rehab.
  • Experience managing multiple units.
You'll work out of your home office and can expect to travel about 30% of the time in this role -- possibly up to 50% of the time in the first few months, as you get to know the people and facilities in your region.

What's in It for You

Remarkable care model -- we deliver a quality, customized alternative to hospitalization and nursing homes. Each of our facilities is an actual home in a residential community and is fully equipped with rehab exercise and entertainment areas, as well as a landscaped backyard to promote outdoor therapeutic activities. Our staff has unparalleled expertise in providing high quality, cost-effective medical management and restorative care to individuals with complex conditions.

A true commitment to our mission -- our mission is more than just a piece of paper posted on the wall. It is embedded in the way we care for our patients and run our business day in and day out. That commitment earned us one of our industry's highest honors: a Gold Seal of Approval from JCAHO for exceeding their high standards for health care quality and safety.

Get up to speed fast -- our model is unique, but you'll get "ground-up" training in short order as you play a lead role in opening new facilities in Granite Bay (northeast of Sacramento) and Fresno. Because we are a smaller organization, your successes in this and other areas won't be "lost in the crowd."

Autonomy and entrepreneurial spirit -- if you're like us, a big hospital or giant healthcare organization just isn't a good fit. We'll expect you to assume ownership of your region and to achieve your goals independently. We'll provide support when you need it and "elbow room" when you don't.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; a 401(k) plan; life and disability insurance; paid time off; and more.

More About Your Role

Reporting to our Chief Operating Office, you will assume leadership of seven facilities in Elk Grove (south of Sacramento), Fairfax (in Marin County), Gilroy, Granite Bay, and Oxnard, as well as two in Fresno. Most facilities have 10 to 12 beds and staffs of 20 to 25, including a Director of Nursing (DON) and nursing staff, an Activities Director, rehab professionals, and maintenance staff.

We treat people of all ages (the average age of our patients is 42) who suffer from catastrophic illness or injury, including traumatic brain injury, pulmonary injuries (ventilator and tracheostomy weaning), neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injury, and congenital anomalies.

In a nutshell, you will provide direction and support to the DONs to help them sustain superior quality and financial performance, and coordinate with sales and marketing to ensure appropriate and timely placement of all viable patients. You'll accomplish this by managing the following areas:
  • The census, ensuring optimal levels and that patients have the longest and most beneficial stay at CareMeridian.
  • Quality, from reviewing cases and care plans to helping resolve conflicts with families or case managers.
  • Revenue, helping set rates and optimizing "collect-ability" of patient accounts.
  • Costs, helping DONs ensure labor costs are in line with budget and/or patient mix, and negotiating favorable contracts with service providers.
  • Compliance with Title 22 and other regulations, and ensuring JHACO accreditation.
  • Risk, including participating in corporate Risk Management meetings.
  • Programs, participating in program changes and working with the Director of Clinical programs to introduce new programs and improve existing ones.
This list is not exhaustive, but intended to give you a feel for the position.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role and at CareMeridian you will have a passion for quality patient care and a commitment to doing what is right for the patients. Along with that you will possess strong business acumen. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Regional Director of Operations, you will:
  • Bring a collaborative leadership style, building positive, productive relationships with DONs and other internal partners, as well as with JHACO representatives, third party providers, and other external contacts.
  • Act as a resource to your people, empowering them to resolve issues; at this level you generally don't "touch" the problems -- you'll provide input to help those who are touching them. Of course, you also will need to know when to be assertive.
  • Approach conflicts and issues with a positive, solutions-oriented attitude, engaging all parties to focus on the common goals.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
